Q&A: What paragraph style is easier to read?

I’ve heard this discussed before and when I noticed it in the BBN forums I thought it would be fun to add my own answer to the conversation. The question I’m talking about is:
What’s easier to read for paragraph formatting: left align, full justified {or centered}?
I add the “centered” part cause that’s usually brought up.
When I write certain posts, I try to think of the visual aesthetic of it all and what the overall look would  be, especially if the posts have lots of pictures in them. When I don’t have huge paragraphs, I like to use centered text so that my words don’t get lost within the pictures and also so it has a better flow with the rest of the post. I know some people swear against centered text, but I don’t mind it for short commentary and think it can be appealing.
However, when I am writing longer, more word-heavy posts I try to left justify it. It is easier to follow longer paragraphs and is more natural to read than centered posts. It can be too hard to read longer posts when they are centered sometimes.
Ultimately, I think it comes down to what you are writing about, the overall visual of your blog, and how long the post is. I also think {this is just my honest thoughts} that since it’s your blog, you can do whatever you think fits the feel & artistic style of your space. If you are doing something really annoying or hard to follow, your readers will let you know. But if not, then you are golden in my book. :)
What are your thoughts about paragraph justification when you write blog posts?

  1. I can’t stand reading LOTS of centered, justified or right text. I tend to skip over the post (and usually the blog) because it’s just too hard to retrain my eyes.

  2. Centered text is something I’m borderline militant on. I hate having to read paragraphs of text that’s centered. In my view, it’s only okay to center if it’s a title, a photo or a photo caption. Otherwise, it’s too much strain on the eyes.
